Our Mission
The mission of the AMRUT Centre of Excellence at MNIT is to empower the sustainable transformation of urban India by developing the capacity of individuals and organizations to address the complex challenges of urban growth, infrastructure development, and environmental sustainability. The Centre aims to bridge the gap between academic theory, policy frameworks, and real-world urban practice by promoting practical approaches that emphasize gender equity, climate resilience, energy efficiency, and inclusive economic growth. It also seeks to establish a collaborative platform for continuous engagement between academia, industry, government, and civil society, fostering innovation and co-creation of solutions that support the development of sustainable, smart, and livable cities across the nation.
Our Vision
Our vision is to establish a innovative Centre dedicated to fostering sustainable urban development. This centre aims to achieve this by empowering a diverse range of stakeholders, including policymakers, urban planners, and various professionals, with the innovative tools, knowledge, and collaborative platforms they need to effectively design, implement, and manage truly sustainable urban settlements that thrive for generations to come.
About the Centre
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is the apex authority of the Government of India at the national level to formulate policies, sponsor and support programme, coordinate the activities of various Central Ministries, State Governments, and other nodal authorities, and monitor the programmes concerning all the issues of housing and urban affairs in the country. It was established on May 13, 1952, as the Ministry of Works, Housing & Supply. Over time, it underwent several name changes reflecting its evolving focus on urban development. The most recent significant restructuring occurred in 2004, where it split into two ministries, the Ministry of Urban Development and Ministry of Urban Employment & Poverty Alleviation. The latter was renamed in 2006 as the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, which eventually merged back into one entity. The Ministry’s mandate has continuously expanded to address urban development, housing, and poverty alleviation challenges. MoHUA’s responsibilities also extend to the administration of government properties, urban transport planning, and the formulation of housing policies and urban employment programs. It is involved in slum clearance, urban planning, water supply, sanitation, and international cooperation in urban development.
